Pelican Creek Nature Trailhead

This short 0.6-mile loop trail is known for the variety of waterfowl and other birds that are usually seen along the way. To your left, you will see Pelican Creek and a marshy area as the creek enters the lake. At the 0.3-mile mark, after traveling a short distance through forest, you arrive at the northern shore of Yellowstone Lake. This is a good location to see Stevenson Island as you look southward. Stevenson Island was named after James Stevenson, a member of the 1871 Hayden Survey exploration party. He definitely earned having the island named after him. He built a 12-foot sailboat (named Annie) of sorts and sailed to the island. In so doing, it was later named in his honor.
