A well-worth short walk via a boardwalk with stairs, or a paved wheelchair accessible path, leads you to lookouts over the north end of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Looking upstream you have a great view of the rugged and steep canyon cut by the Yellowstone River as it flows northward and the unique columnar jointing pillar geology on the opposite side of the canyon. Looking downstream you see the bleached and barren hillside of Calcite Springs with its steam venting hydrothermal features. The rugged notched canyon walls provide excellent nesting locations for osprey and other birds of prey that are often seen soaring in the sky above.
